Ah, you can tell it's Saturday here in Longmont. The sun's shining brightly, the birds are chirping and the howlin wingnuts are dancing on the rooftops.

After a hearty breakfast of fried spam washed down with Red Bull, my counterparts on the bright red end of the political spectrum get their daily lethal dose of hate from Blech and O'Really then sit down to churn out yet another screed.

Now they're trying to tell the older Democrats (code words: 'JFK-style Dems') that it's wrong to be activists.

You'd think they completely missed the last election.

The truly repulsive thing is that they invoke Kennedy's name.

I'm sure John is turning over in his grave having these vicious clowns using his name. These sociopathic shitheads spit on everything he held dear. To see them using his name for any purpose isn't just ironic, it's a sign of (more) mental illness.

They prate on and on (and on and on and on) about 'redistribution of wealth' and 'nannystate' which is supremely ironic since they work for an agency which is nothing but a nanny itself and their tiny readership is a group of hardcores that believe all wealth should be redistributed upwards.

But my favorite part is their nonstop attack on others faith. These demi-men, these violent barely-restrained children have the unmitigated gall to insult anyone about their relationship with God.

There's another force in this world that does all these same things - lies, hates and attacks people of faith. Maybe those folks should trade in that lightning rod for a pitchfork.

The story of a Boulder County kidnapping over the weekend has gotten considerably stranger since the arrest of Joseph Scott Carter for the crime. During a court appearance yesterday, Carter urged the judge to add "levying war against the United States" to his list of crimes. Turns out he's a former senate candidate and self-proclaimed patriot (as he made clear on his bizarre MySpace page) who was busted last year for publicly threatening a co-worker while wearing chain mail body armor...
The previous year, Carter registered to run for Senate District 31 as a Republican. According to the Colorado Secretary of State's website, he was also behind an organization called the Colorado Patriot Committee, which raised a grand total of $12 for his cause.

Mr. Carter is accused of kidnapping a hiking couple near Nederland with a rifle, tying them up and then ranting about President Barack Obama for an unspecified period. He apparently didn't do a very good job tying up one of his abductees, who got away, after which time Mr. Carter allegedly decided that whatever he was planning to do wasn't a good idea and let the other one go.

As much as a dude in chain mail would liven up proceedings on the floor of the Colorado Senate, we're sorry to say that Joseph Scott Carter's career in politics is probably at an end--unless Dick Wadhams really needs a pinch hitter, that is.

FLDS Member Gets 17 Years For Sexual Assault of Minor In Celestial Marriage

A Texas trial court judge yesterday sentenced FLDS member Abram Harker Jeffs to 17 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for sexual assault of a child. Jeffs was convicted of assaulting a 15-year old with whom he had entered a "spiritual" or "celestial" marriage while he was legally married to another woman. Jeff has three other wives and children in other states. Yesterday's San Angelo Standard Times reports that Jeffs could have received up to life in prison, and that the sentence he received is the lowest first-degree felony sentence yet for a member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Much of the evidence in Jeffs' trial was seized in the high-profile April 2008 raid of the FLDS Yearning for Zion Ranch.

Loveland man charged in threat against Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak
Health care law cited as reason for threats

A Loveland man and his father have been charged in a federal criminal complaint for conspiring to threaten, assault, kidnap or murder Democratic U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak of Michigan.
The U.S. Attorney's Office announced the charges today against David Hesch, 49, of Loveland, and his father Russell Hesch, 73, of West Branch, Mich.

The pair were upset over Stupak's vote in favor of the health care reform bill signed in March and sent a threatening letter to Stupak's office, according to prosecutors. The letter was sent from Russell Hesch to his son David Hesch, who then sent the letter to Stupak from Denver, according to a federal criminal complaint.

In the letter, which is signed "The Devil within us," the writer made explicit threats against Stupak and his family.

The letter states the following:

"You wanted to get some Washington paint for the bridge? Not to worry, I will paint the Mackinaw Bridge with the blood of you and your family members. I will not say when and with who but I will save your blood for the high towers toward the end of this project. You will live long enough to truly experience the the unfortunate but definite consequences of your decision. You will watch your world slowly crumble and erode around you. Things that used to be important won't seem so important anymore."

This is the mindset of the far-right lunatic fringe in Colorado. Loveland is just down the road from Longmont (new motto: "We're killing Progressive ideas as fast as we can") and closer than some might think in mentality, aside from the fact that Loveland is lily-white-pure compared to Longmont.

Having lost an election they were sure they'd bought and paid for - then losing control of Congress they've clearly gone stark staring bonkers.

Count on seeing much more of this in the next two years. Every effort imaginable will be put forth to take back 'their' country - no amount of money will be too great, no offense too petty or violent. (Reuters) - Vaccines that contain a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal cannot cause autism on their own, a special U.S. court ruled on Friday, dealing one more blow to parents seeking to blame vaccines for their children's illness.

The special U.S. Court of Federal Claims ruled that vaccines could not have caused the autism of an Oregon boy, William Mead, ending his family's quest for reimbursement.

"The Meads believe that thimerosal-containing vaccines caused William's regressive autism. As explained below, the undersigned finds that the Meads have not presented a scientifically sound theory," Special Master George Hastings, a former tax claims expert at the Department of Justice, wrote in his ruling.

In February 2009, the court ruled against three families who claimed vaccines caused their children's autism, saying they had been "misled by physicians who are guilty, in my view, of gross medical misjudgment".

The families sought payment under the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, a no-fault system that has a $2.5 billion fund built up from a 75-cent-per-dose tax on vaccines.

Instead of judges, three "special masters" heard the three test cases representing thousands of other petitioners.

They asked whether a combination vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR, plus a mercury-containing preservative called thimerosal, caused the children's symptoms.

MYSTERIOUS CONDITION

More than 5,300 cases were filed by parents who believed vaccines may have caused autism in their children. The no-fault payout system is meant to protect vaccine makers from costly lawsuits that drove many out of the vaccine-making business.

Autism is a mysterious condition that affects as many as one in 110 U.S. children. The so-called spectrum ranges from mild Asperger's Syndrome to severe mental retardation and social disability, and there is no cure or good treatment.

The U.S. Institute of Medicine has reported several times that no link can be found between vaccines and autism.

Supporters of the scientific community welcomed the ruling.

Two people shot near Allenspark
Authorities say shooting believed accidental

Two people were shot Saturday afternoon in the Johnny Park area near Allenspark, but neither appears to be seriously injured, according to the Larimer County Sherrif's Department.

The incident happened around 4 p.m., north of Larimer County Road 47. A Larimer County sheriff's officer said two children and two adults had gone up to the area to do some target shooting, in two separate groups. He said neither group knew the other was there until after the shooting, which is believed to be accidental.

One victim had been shot in the abdomen and was taken to Longmont United Hospital, the officer said, while the other had been hit in the buttocks and was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies. The names of the victims have not yet been released, and it has not yet been said whether the victims were the adults or the children.

Children direct commercial pilots at New York City’s JFK Airport

An air traffic controller at John F. Kennedy International Airport allowed his grade-schoolers to give orders to commercial airline pilots.

New York City, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A disturbing incident occurred at John F. Kennedy International airport (JFK) when children gave radio instructions to five commercial airline pilots, reported March 4 2010, according to Fox News.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) www.faa.gov sent officials to investigate the February 17th mishap, which could have led to a serious and tragic accident if something went wrong. One the air traffic controllers at JFK decided to let two children – his 7-year-old son and his young daughter- speak orders to five pilots of commercial airline pilot instructing them that they were clear for takeoff.

The air traffic controller, identified as 48-year-old Glenn Duffy, resident of Long Island and his supervisor were given a temporary leave after the incident become public in the media. It was reported that the children were repeating their father’s instructions, which were heard in the background, while they sat in the tower directing the pilots.

The FAA has declined to identify the controller, but a person with knowledge of the situation identified him Thursday as Glenn Duffy, a 20 year veteran of the job with experience at several of the big air hubs that serve New York. The person spoke with The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk about the case. In the late 1990s, Duffy was a frequent critic of the FAA while serving as the union representative for controllers at Newark Liberty International Airport.

This just underlines to me how some people have absolutely no sense at all or any sense of duty.

What scares me is that they're in charge of huge numbers of people's survival daily.

We need to do better. LOTS BETTER.

The Washington Times is a newspaper that looks with favor upon the Bush/Cheney/Obama/neocon wars of aggression in the Middle East and favors making terrorists pay for 9/11. Therefore, I was surprised to learn on February 24 that the most popular story on the paper’s website for the past three days was the “Inside the Beltway” report, “Explosive News,” about the 31 press conferences in cities in the US and abroad on February 19 held by Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, an organization of professionals which now has 1,000 members.

I was even more surprised that the news report treated the press conference seriously. How did three World Trade Center skyscrapers suddenly disintegrate into fine dust? How did massive steel beams in three skyscrapers suddenly fail as a result of short-lived, isolated, and low temperature fires? “A thousand architects and engineers want to know, and are calling on Congress to order a new investigation into the destruction of the Twin Towers and Building 7,” reports the Washington Times.

The paper reports that the architects and engineers have concluded that the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Institute of Standards and Technology provided “insufficient, contradictory and fraudulent accounts of the circumstances of the towers’ destruction” and are “calling for a grand jury investigation of NIST officials.”

The newspaper reports that Richard Gage, the spokesperson for the architects and engineers said: “Government officials will be notified that “Misprision of Treason,’ U.S. Code 18 (Sec. 2382) is a serious federal offense, which requires those with evidence of treason to act. The implications are enormous and may have profound impact on the forthcoming Khalid Sheik Mohammed trial.”

There is now an organization, Firefighters for 9/11 Truth. At the main press conference in San Francisco, Eric Lawyer,the head of that organization, announced the firefighters’ support for the architects and engineers’ demands. He reported that no forensic investigation was made of the fires that are alleged to have destroyed the three buildings and that this failure constitutes a crime.

Mandated procedures were not followed, and instead of being preserved and investigated, the crime scene was destroyed. He also reported that there are more than one hundred first responders who heard and experienced explosions and that there is radio, audio and video evidence of explosions.

Also at the press conference, physicist Steven Jones presented the evidence of nano-thermite in the residue of the WTC buildings found by an international panel of scientists led by University of Copenhagen nano-chemist Professor Niels Harrit. Nano-thermite is a high-tech explosive/pyrotechnic capable of instantly melting steel girders.

Before we yell “conspiracy theory,” we should be aware that the architects, engineers, firefighters, and scientists offer no theory. They provide evidence that challenges the official theory. This evidence is not going to go away.

If expressing doubts or reservations about the official story in the 9/11 Commission Report makes a person a conspiracy theory kook, then we have to include both co-chairmen of the 9/11 Commission and the Commission’s legal counsel, all of whom have written books in which they clearly state that they were lied to by government officials when they conducted their investigation, or, rather, when they presided over the investigation conducted by executive director Philip Zelikow, a member of President George W. Bush’s transition team and Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and a co-author of Bush Secretary of State Condi “Mushroom Cloud” Rice.

I can only hope that the numbers quickly get too big to be white washed and ignored that the American zombies wake up and revolt; it will take nothing less. I would only hope that by striking a nerve that stimulates the inevitable double standard, knee-jerk government reaction that results in more stupid draconian restrictions people wake up and begin to see the pompous political thugs and their mindless minions for what they are. Sadly, though I spent my entire life trying to believe it wasn’t so, but violence not only is the answer, it is the only answer.

It should be noted that he also rails against “GM executives,” “drug and insurance companies,” and “organized religion.” But the central complaint of the rant is the government, as he seems to have had some tax-related problems in the past.

The sickness that permeates the extreme religious right never stops surprising me. We've seen Wiley Drake's shtick before, but it's still as repulsive as ever. What type of religion do these freaks practice anyway?

Southern Baptist Pastor Wiley Drake of Buena Park sent out an email Monday night, saying that perhaps his prayers had been answered with the death of Rep. John Murtha yesterday.
“Maybe God took him out,” Drake wrote. “Maybe God Answered our IMPRECATORY prayer that we prayed every 30 days.”
The Pennsylvania congressman, a decorated former Marine who fiercely opposed the Iraq war, died at the age of 77 after complications from gallbladder surgery.

I asked Drake if his statements weren’t distasteful, particularly coming immediately after Murtha’s death. He said that as a Christian, he didn’t buy into the sentiment of not speaking ill of the dead.
“It’s not distasteful to pray the word of God and include somebody’s name,” he said. “I didn’t celebrate his death. I said maybe it was God’s answer to our imprecatory prayer.”
Drake regularly asks his “prayer warriors” to participate in prayer targeting “unrighteous” politicians. He typically uses Psalms 109, including these passages including in his Monday email: “Let his days be few; and let another take his office.” And, “Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.”
At one point, Drake prayed for the death of President Barack Obama. However, he dropped that because he wants to see Obama faces charges that he is not a natural-born citizen and so cannot be president. Drake has such a lawsuit on appeal. Drake said he and his prayer warriors had been praying for Murtha’s death for four or five months. Among other things, Drake said Murtha’s use of profanity and his use of God’s name in vain. Beside praying for the death of specific politicians, he said they pray for “politicians in general who are taking unrighteous stands

VA: Most GI Bill calls did not connect

If you have had trouble getting your question about GI Bill benefits answered when you call the Veterans Affairs Department’s education benefits call center, you are not alone.

VA officials acknowledged almost 90 percent of calls to the Muskogee, Okla., center never connected between October and December. They either got a busy signal or a message that the call could not be completed.

For those who did get through, about 30 percent of the calls were terminated before their question was answered, either because the caller hung up or was disconnected.

Some of the missed calls were from the same person trying again and again to get through, according to VA sources. They base that possibility on statistics showing that there were 1.1 million attempted calls in December but only about 145,000 calls that ended up connecting with people at the call center.

To George S - there are many reason Bryan didn't want the "scrutiny" and those here who mentioned being scrutinized by his opposition as to who gave him what was the number 1 reason. Secondary to that, he didn't want his own supporters to wonder where their money went - some candidates take in money and then use that money to throw a party to raise more money. Those expenses can be scrutinized by the opposition, wondering xyz company was really being paid for services to the campaign or was it a "favor?" Bryan didn't want to deal with any of that nonesense because it takes attention away from the real issues. Lastly, as campaign manager for my first campaign, and frankly scared that even when trying to act within the letter of the law for reporting that I might make a mistake and be fined (this was the reality of the LCFPA for people new to politics, like myself) the less opportunity for mistakes, the better and by not taking cash contributions, it as one less thing to have to worry about. People who donated in-kind to the campaign knew excatly what they were getting for their money and how they were helping. That's how Bryan wanted it - you literally "got what you paid for" be it t-shits, signs, or what have you.

Weird Ballot In Cambridge?

Note to readers: Please let me know what you’re seeing in the field today in Massachusetts.

A software engineer in Cambridge says he was handed a fishy ballot at the polling station in a local firehouse — it already had the bubble next to Scott Brown’s name filled in. But he doesn’t think it likely that it was fraud.

“Scott Brown’s bubble was already filled in,” the software engineer, Aaron Kemp, 28, tells me by phone. “I handed it back to them and asked, `Can I have a clean ballot, please?’”

The workers at the polling place in the Lexington Avenue Firehouse “were very surprised,” Kemp says, adding that he asked them to look through the other ballots to see if any others had a bubble filled in. “They looked through and they didn’t see any other ones,” he says.

Kemp says the area is very Democratic, and he worries that other voters might get a similar ballot without noticing, fill in Martha Coakley’s name, and submit a ballot with two names filled in, rendering it ineligible. But he says he thinks it was more likely a foul up than fraud. And, obviously, this is only one example.

A Colorado Department of Transportation employee could face discipline for forwarding an email with a photo depicting President Barack Obama shining the shoes of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

The 73-year-old woman, whose name was not released, forwarded the email to at least four co-workers, among other people, on Dec. 22 using her state email account. At least one recipient complained.

The person who originally sent the e-mail, who isn't a state employee, wrote "It appears he (Obama) has found his niche."

CDOT spokeswoman Mindy Crane says the worker could face discipline ranging from a written reprimand to suspension. Employment rules require that she meet with personnel officials first and have a chance to respond in writing.

"Could face"? Please. This woman must be a staunch GOP supporter to even have a job at this point.

I wonder how this would have played out had it been a Democrat doing something similiar during Bush's reign of terror. Yeah.

My friend, the wonderful sf writer Peter Watts was beaten without provocation and arrested by US border guards on Tuesday. I heard about it early Wednesday morning in London and called Cindy Cohn, the legal director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. She worked her contacts to get in touch with civil rights lawyers in Michigan, and we mobilized with Caitlin Sweet (Peter's partner) and David Nickle (Peter's friend) and Peter was arraigned and bailed out later that day.

But now Peter faces a felony rap for "assaulting a federal officer" (Peter and the witness in the car say he didn't do a thing, and I believe them). Defending this charge will cost a fortune, and an inadequate defense could cost Peter his home, his livelihood and his liberty.

Peter's friends are raising money for his legal defense. I just sent him CAD$1,000, because this is absolutely my biggest nightmare: imprisoned in a foreign country for a trumped-up offense against untouchable border cops. I would want my friends to help me out if it ever happened to me.

Sf writer David Nickle writes,

Hugo-award-nominated science fiction author Dr. Peter Watts is in serious legal trouble after he was beaten, pepper-sprayed and imprisoned by American border guards at a Canada U.S. border crossing December 8. This is a call to friends, fans and colleagues to help.

Peter, a Canadian citizen, was on his way back to Canada after helping a friend move house to Nebraska over the weekend. He was stopped at the border crossing at Port Huron, Michigan by U.S. border police for a search of his rental vehicle. When Peter got out of the car and questioned the nature of the search, the gang of border guards subjected him to a beating, restrained him and pepper sprayed him. At the end of it, local police laid a felony charge of assault against a federal officer against Peter. On Wednesday, he posted bond and walked across the border to Canada in shirtsleeves (he was released by Port Huron officials with his car and possessions locked in impound, into a winter storm that evening). He's home safe. For now. But he has to go back to Michigan to face the charge brought against him.

The charge is spurious. But it's also very serious. It could mean two years in prison in the United States, and a ban on travel in that country for the rest of Peter's life. Peter is mounting a vigorous defense, but it's going to be expensive - he's effectively going up against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and he needs the best legal help that he can get.

He's got that help, courtesy of one of the top criminal lawyers in the State of Michigan. We, Peter's friends and colleagues here in Canada, want to make sure he gets the help he needs financially to come out of this nightmare whole.

The need for that help is real. While Peter is a critically successful science fiction writer, he is by no means a best-selling author. Without help, the weight of his legal fees could literally put him on the street by spring.

We can't let that happen. So there's going to be fundraising.

We're going to think of something suitable in the New Year - but immediately, anyone who wants to help can do so easily. Peter's website, rifters.com, has a link to a PayPal account, whimsically named the Niblet Memorial Kibble Fund. He set it up years ago for fans of the Hugo-nominated novel Blindsight and his Rifters books, to cover veterinary bills for the cats he habitually rescues from the mean streets of Toronto. Peter has made it clear that he doesn't want to use the veterinary money to cover his lawsuit. But until we can figure out a more graceful conduit for the legal fund, that's the best place to send donations for now. Just let Peter know that the donation's for his legal defense, and that's where it will go.

Big Money, Republican Machine Buys Longmont Election

Longmont has been under political attack from outside of Longmont and outside of Colorado. Aligned with these powerful and well-funded entities are individuals and groups within Longmont who have been furious since the November 2007 election produced a progressive-leaning majority. They are using outside money and their own deep pockets to "take back Longmont." And they have succeeded.

Western Tradition Partnership (WTP), headed by Bozeman, Montana Republicans (former US representative Ron Marlenee and state representative John Sinrud) is the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit against Longmont over electioneering provisions and independent expenditures in the Longmont Fair Campaign Practices Act.

WTP is rabidly anti-environmental and absolutist on property rights with the stated purpose to target local and state governments. It receives its backing primarily from the oil-gas-coal industries.

Longmont Leadership is a party to this lawsuit along with former Longmont mayors
Julia Pirnack and Bob Askey, both Republicans, the Longmont Area Realtors Association, and Republican blogger Chris Rodriguez. It was formed to unseat former mayor Roger Lange and Ward 2 councilmember Karen Benker, and did so with a contribution in excess of $11,000 from Western Tradition Partnership, almost the entirety of Longmont Leadership's funding.

Western Tradition Partnership is registered with the IRS as a nonprofit 501c4. According to Luis Toro, general counsel for Colorado Ethics Watch, these nonprofit groups have come to replace 527 organizations as the favored shell for political contributions. They became popular after 527s faced greater disclosure requirements at the state and national level.

Aspen Daily News reports that "527s...lack the spending caps that other political groups have, but they must now release contribution and expenditure information. 501c4s are allowed "greater anonymity but are required to pursue mostly nonpolitical activities, which they don't always do. Groups that get involved late in the process don't have to disclose much at all until December, long after the races are decided."

The Colorado registered agent for Western Tradition Partnership is their attorney

Scott Gessler, who is also the Republican candidate for Secretary of State in 2010. It is not at all coincidental that Gessler is likely to use WTP's lawsuit over Longmont's Fair Campaign Practices Act as a platform for further degradation of campaign financing regulations.

Scott Shires is also listed as a WTP registered agent. He is a Republican operative and front man for many 527s and he has a history of violating campaign reporting regulations. Shires has also been indicted on an alleged money laundering scheme to hide an illegal gambling operation.

Shires is behind the Colorado League of Taxpayers who attacked Longmont council candidate Richard Juday in a January 2008 mailer. A similar event occurred in Garfield County. Colorado Ethics Watch sued Shires for campaign violations in that case and he was fined in excess of $7,000, an amount apparently still unpaid.

Western Tradition Partnership also had an electioneering violation complaint filed against it with the State of Montana's Commissioner of Political Practices in October 2008.

Reporting for the Missoulian State Bureau on 5/4/08, Charles S. Johnson asked WTP who else was helping the organization and was told that Christian LeFer was helping with graphics and web design work. (LeFer is a public figure in both the Montana and Colorado Right-to-Work organizations.)

LeFer is also the web registrant for the "Greeley Report" with a striking similarity to the anonymous "Longmont Report" that appeared in January 2008 to defeat Juday in favor of current councilmember and former Rep. Tom DeLay staffer Gabe Santos. After the election it targeted Benker and councilmember Sean McCoy.

Stephanie Baum, "Take Back Longmont" blogger and wife of newly-elected mayor Bryan Baum, wrote to Doug Wray about the person responsible for Longmont Report, saying that she "knows who he is" because she "met with the owner of Longmont Report." Baum and Chris Rodriguez move in the same political circle. Rodriguez is well known for his blog vitriol and was described in the Boulder Weekly's report "The gloves come off," referring to the recent Longmont city council races.

Also mentioned in "The glove comes off" is www.frontrangechickens.com. Registration data for this website is deliberately anonymous. However, it has at least two things in common with Longmont Report. It is vicious in its politics of personal destruction and character assassination, and it has an implied threat of violence.

So who benefitted--politically and financially--from the Western Tradition Partnership lawsuit and other suits targeting the City of Longmont? Who benefitted from the bombardment of expensive mailers that appeared in mail boxes all over Longmont? Who benefitted from attack blogs, push-polls and robo-calls
against candidates? With the results of the November 3rd election now in, the answers are self-evident:
Bryan Baum, Gabe Santos, Katie Witt and Alex Sammoury.

Expect more of the same from these and similar entities in 2010, 2011, 2012 and beyond. It's worked repeatedly for Republicans, and there's no reason for the Republicans to abandon their strategies and tactics of trash politics for the upcoming election cycles.

The wingnuts are at it again - now they have a plan¹ to slaughter all the prairie dogs - not with something as tame as poisons (heck the GOP thinks poisons are fine, as long as it's in food coming from China) but instead with exploding gas. I can almost hear the hillbilly howls of glee now: "Lookee thar Junior! That blowed up reeeaaal good!"

I can understand their eagerness too - with someone like Gabe Santos on council, they no doubt have a gigantic supply of (ahem) natural gas. Trouble is, the system² they're looking at uses propane. Might take a few custom adapters to get it hooked up to our erstwhile councilman. Besides, flow-control could also be a problem, especially after some of the lunches he eats. But I digress.

Besides, the Dept of Agriculture tried em and they don't work:

"Gas exploding devices or anhydrous ammonia or other toxic gases have not proven to be safe, reliable or effective. The best studies have shown that oxy-acetylene or propane/oxygen mixtures injected for 45 seconds and then ignited only reduced ground squirrel populations by about 40 per cent and did so at a very high cost. Although no data has been generated on the effectiveness of anhydrous ammonia, there has been, at best, mixed comments on its use. Cost, practically, safety and labour are considered serious drawbacks to anhydrous ammonia fumigation."

So if it doesn't work for squirrels, the no-doubt hardier prarie dogs will likely be even less affected. More likely the lil varmints will turn the tables on our would-be extermination advocates and send them all sky-high when their boom-boom machine blows up in their faces.

However, I'm not sure that would be a bad thing... evolution takes a lot of forms³.

The Rude Pundit joined the Super-Duper Prayer Team several years ago under a nom de rude (so he can be a spy in the house o' love), and every week he receives his dirty prayerchez orders, telling him what to implore the invisible sky wizard to do to others and/or for us. This week, it's a special Thanksgiving version, which did you know is all about socialism?

Aw, sure. "In their struggle to survive in the New World, our Pilgrim Fathers learned that socialism does not work! A two-year long experiment in 1621-1622 taught them that when government redistributes income, scarcity, dependence and even death result...For their first two years at Plymouth, the Pilgrims embraced a well-intended scheme: the fruit of each man's labor went into a common storehouse; each then took from the storehouse as his family had need," says the FRC (motto: "Your one-stop history filter"). "Laziness and thievery resulted when capable men refused to labor but demanded to be fed." Then, one might imagine, they got drunk and had a giant gay orgy since apparently no women were around. It's why the sexual position known as "pilgrim buggery" involves buckles and...oh, wait. No?

Hells, no. According to the FRC, then good and wise Governor Billy Bradford changed shit around, "requiring each family to raise its own food." And they lived happily ever after because from 1623 on because of "the hard lessons about socialism and the benefits of free enterprise learned by those who inspired Thanksgiving Day."

And that'd be awesome if it was true. However, that version of the pilgrim story "misrepresents the purpose of the Pilgrims and the results of their heroic strivings. It derives from a superficial appraisal of a statement by Governor William Bradford and a partial reading of the copious records left by the literate Pilgrims." That quote is not from some wild and woolly liberal blog spouting socialist propaganda. It's actually from a 1976 publication by the John fuckin' Birch Society (hence the "heroism" of Indian slaying). And if those paranoid motherfuckers decide something ain't socialist, it ain't fuckin' socialist. Even rabid right-wingers know the real story is so much more complex that there's no way to reduce to a grunting "socialism bad, capitalism good" simian dichotomy.

(Of course, the notion that it was only stupid, selfish white people who couldn't live communally in the "New World" doesn't come into play here.)

But, still, this is supposed to be about the mighty, mighty praytones of Thanksgiving, and here's the kick-Karl-Marx-in-the-taint prayer: "May families across America, especially Christians, reflect this Thanksgiving upon these great lessons of socialism vs. liberty," and further, "May we unite in prayer against every new government program built upon an ideology in which government exercises far too much power." Mmm, that makes stuffing taste so much more stuffinger.

The SDPT is always given bible verses to demonstrate that the prayers have some stamp of approval. They are almost always confounding. Like this one that's supposed to somehow relate to the pilgrim story, from Isaiah 61:1: "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners."

Seriously, FRC, does anyone actually read the bible there? Because not only is that a verse that asks for mercy for prisoners, but five short verses later, Isaiah 61:6-7, it actually supports socialism: "You will feed on the wealth of nations, and in their riches you will boast. Instead of their shame, my people will receive a double portion." The King James version is a hell of a lot more explicit, something that's easily interpretable as a call for revolution against the rich. Share that dinner.

I feel compelled to respond to the opinion written by Bryan Baum in today's paper. He is correct in one regard, Longmont should have purchased the land that the Union group currently owns. The problem is his timeline. It should have been purchased under Pirnack's or Stoecker's administration. But neither cared about purchasing open space, just selling Longmont to the highest bidder. It was already purchased before the current administration took charge.

Please do not forget about the petition which contained over 6000 signatures, that sought to either reverse the annexation or take it to a vote of the citizens of Longmont. I believe this was the major reason for the withdrawal of the annexation request. Mr. Baum, you belittle the citizens who signed that petition as inconsequential by not even acknowledging its existence.

Our concern regarding the annexation was not building a church. Among our concerns were a) cost to the city after the municipal tax had expired; b) infrastructure costs; c) percent of tax-exempt property; and d) water. When we asked for more information regarding these issues, we received none.

We all watched Julia at a council meeting call the online petition spam rather than show concern regarding the opinion of a large group of citizens. And Julia stating in the Times-Call Opinion that the citizens of Longmont were not smart enough to make decisions.

I urge people to vote for Roger Lange and not back the old regime that sold Longmont; which I believe Baum, Santos, and Witt would do. I believe that most people have already voted but please don't forget all the hard work that we did to have a voice in the direction of our city. It is our city and our voice and we are not for sale.

Former Greeley Realtor headed to court on Monday

A former Greeley Realtor will appear Monday to face 12 felony charges in Weld District Court upon a grand jury indictment.

The Weld County Sheriff's Office had a warrant out for the arrest of Tracy Todd, 35, of Greeley, for a little more than a month before his arrest Oct. 2. Three days later, he put up a piece of property as collateral¹ to get out of jail on a $75,000 bond.

The Weld County Grand Jury handed down the 20-page indictment against Todd in late August, alleging he participated in a kickback scheme on six home sales in February 2006. Todd's Realtor license was suspended for 30 days in June 2006, and it was revoked last year for his participation in mortgage fraud schemes².

The indictment charges Todd with six counts of felony forgery and six counts of felony theft.

His hearing is set for 10:30 a.m., at which time the case will likely be continued to give him time to discuss the issue with a lawyer.

I'm amazed at the ferocity of the online rhetoric against council members Benker, McCoy, Hansen and Levison. I spoke at city council attempting to make public legitimate documented information concerning Gabe Santos and was censured. Apparently it's okay for folks on the (far) right to endlessly slander and smear the folks their candidates of choice are running against.

The double standard is painfully obvious - and repellent.

Civility? I doubt there's any real intent to be civil at this point. I just hope violence doesn't occur, especially considering the frequency and volume of these unhinged attacks and especially the libellous emails being sent to my private clients (and which were forwarded back to me) and the two new anonymous attack blogs.

Non-partisan? Please. The GOP-backed candidates in the city council election are using the politics of personal destruction and coyly pretending to have nothing to do with it. Only the willfully ignorant and complicit refuse to see it.

An Imperial, Mo., man is dead after accidentally shooting himself in the head while teaching his girlfriend firearms safety. James Looney, 40, was demonstrating how to use the different safety mechanisms on several guns to his girlfriend. Here's a modest proposal: since there's so many things named 'Pratt' in Longmont, why not rename the town 'Pratt Falls' so it can reflect the endless chaos created by the right-wing politicians that are desperately seeking to wrest back control of it?

I mean, really.

It's pretty obvious to me that too much power corrupts and money, oh baby, equals power.

The trouble for the 'let em eat cake' class is that America's still a democracy and won't just quietly lay down and spread their cheeks for em. Damn, that must be frustrating! To have that luscious public trough just filled with money only inches away from their arthritic jewel-encrusted talons, er... fingers and not be able to just grab it all (like they've done since childhood)... wowweee... must make those anal cysts all but pop from fury.

You can see evidence of this on the web... I mean... when people start writing about cleaning their pubes with floor cleaners, I'm thinkin' they've spent one too many hours in front of the teevee machine eatin bon-bons, playin video games and dreaming of world domination.

I suppose it's one of the prices of living in a free country that those wackjobs can spew their bull all over the web, but the flip side is that we're just as free to say what we think of them.

And the best part is that it surely pisses them off worse than anything else. I'm sure, given a chance they'd have guillotines back in fashion if they could. Till then... no (literary) mercy!

and it contains a badly-duplicated courier-type mailer (looks like 1950s technology) filled with gibberish about taxes.

Dear (name);
"To avoid disconnection of your home and office power, please remit payment of $3900 to the United States Treasury."
If the radical environmentalists get their way, "rich" folks like you and me just might receive such a demand to "pay up, or go dark" -- and under "Cap and Trade", there's a back-door production tax on everything - right down to our candles!

It really pains me that this hillbilly nitwit actually represents Wray, Colorado - he dishonors my family name every time he opens his gap-toothed mouth.

The worst part about this mailer is that it's designed to swamp Udall and Markey's phones since it's clearly aimed at older higher-income bracket GOP members.

The right in Colorado is on the run and the dirty tricks are coming out - tell your older right-wing relatives and friends that Greg Brophy is a psychotic idiot (in case they don't already know it) and to ignore this mailer - it's just another 'fear and smear' attempt by the wild-eyed wingnuts.
